Trivia question: most fans of baseball history know that Indians legend Bob Feller struck out 17 batters in a game his rookie year (1935), when he was only 17 years old. What most people don’t know is that someone else has also struck out as many batters in a game as they were years old. Who is it?
Kerry Wood, right?
I think that it is Kerry Wood. He threw a one hitter and had 20 strikeouts on May 6, 1998.
Yes, it’s Kerry Wood. For some reason, I feel like Feller is so much more famous for this feat than Wood, perhaps because being in the majors at 17 is just that much more amazing.
Mom — you might be interested to know that Campbell Rankin was at that game in 1998 — he and some friends had ditched afternoon classes to go sit in the bleachers at Wrigley. Good game to pick!
